About the institute

A research initiative for human possibility.

Expand human possibility through better social and informational systems.

The systems around us shape our lives.

Dialogues Research Institute studies how information, human agency, social organization, and intelligent technologies interact. We aim to develop knowledge and tools through which people can understand and deliberately change the systems influencing them.

Our research draws on cybernetics, the social sciences, philosophy, and computer science. Its practical expression can include models, experiments, design principles, and computational instruments.

Part of Dialogues.

The institute's inquiry sits alongside the tools built by Dialogues. Topos is a practical expression of the interest in personal intelligence and individual control. Research and product development inform one another while serving different purposes.

An initiative taking shape.

The research agenda is developing. This site introduces our intellectual interests, framework, and approach, and links to existing public writing.

Inquiry across disciplines.

The questions reach across individual experience, community life, and computational design. Explore the agenda and public writing to understand the work taking shape.
