Computational Community Design

The study and design of the structures through which people relate, coordinate, and act together.

From understanding to possibility.

Social systems influence what people can perceive, what they can do, and whom they can become. We ask how communities can gain the knowledge and tools to deliberately shape those conditions.

Computational Community Design brings together modeling, simulation, and experimentation to explore alternative arrangements and understand their consequences for the people within them.

Can communities become more capable of understanding and redesigning themselves?

Three connected perspectives.

Personal intelligence

A person's representations, knowledge, memory, and control within a system.

Ambient social intelligence

A system's capacity to understand relevant circumstances and help members recognize opportunities for better interaction.

Community design

The roles, rules, information flows, and arrangements through which people interact. These perspectives can be studied separately or together.

What the research can produce.

We seek models, research findings, design principles, and computational instruments that help people understand and change the systems influencing them. The agenda connects individual understanding with the capacity for collective change.
